MAID
The College of Registered Psychiatric Nurses, the College and Association of Registered Nurses and the College of Licensed Practical Nurses of Alberta have finalized and published the Medical Assistance in Dying Guidelines for all nurses in Alberta. The guidelines contain key information on Eligibility, the Nurses Role, Communicate with the Client and Family and much more. The guidelines can be found in the Library on the website.
PROPOSED REGULATION CHANGES
The College has proposed a number of changes to the Registered Psychiatric Nurses Profession Regulation. The regulation creates a structure for scope of practice, registration requirements, continuing competence and conduct processes.
A few of the proposed changes include:
* A requirement to demonstrate competence in psychiatric nursing jurisprudence
* Authorization for RPNs to prescribe Schedule 1 medication
* Authorization for RPNs to order diagnostic tests
* RPNs to supervise unregulated workers performing psychosocial interventions.
* The Continuing Competence Program
* RPNs to administer ultra sound.
The original Registered Psychiatric Nurse Regulation was proclaimed in November of 2005. The College continually monitors the changing health care climate and the needs of Albertans in care. This includes the ongoing review of restricted activities and the need to move forward with exploring and requesting changing restricted activity authorizations of registered psychiatric nurses, specifically related to RPN prescribing and the ordering of diagnostic tests. Administering ultra sound is a skill that has been a part of the Psychiatric Nursing education program for many years.
The move forward with this potential change is to optimize the practice of registered psychiatric nurses, facilitate system changes and increase access to care plus increase system efficiency and cost-effectiveness.
Further updates will be coming as the College works closely with Alberta Health to move the proposed changes forward.
